Wide or Narrow Road

CHURCHES OF CHRIST are autonomous congregations of the one church that our Lord, Jesus Christ established in 33 AD (Eph. 4:4-6 Col.1:18; Eph. 5:23-30). In 33 AD, when the Lord's church was established, the doctrine of Christ (now our New Testament) was all that was taught by the men inspired by God (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

Matt. 16 (NKJV) "16Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

From false teachers among the brotherhood (within the Lord's church) apostasy came about through the man organized Catholic Church which grew out of and broke away from the church that Christ died for and established. The Catholic Church (1 Tim. 4:1-4), 'falsely claims to be' the church of Jesus Christ, but actually is patterned after Roman government (See: Slow Apostasy Away From The Bible Organization Of The Church and also view: Organization Of The Local Church). The Catholic Church falsely perpetrated the Crusades (Pope Urban ll, Pope Gregory Vlll) & the Inquisition (Popes Innocent lll & Gregory lX) in the name of 'Christianity'. The Bible tells us that the weapons of Christian warfare are not fleshly and carnal like those used by the Catholics, but rather spiritual. Roman Catholic doctrines have evolved over time and are still changing. Catholism contradicts The Bible.

Gal. 1 (NKJV) Only One Gospel
"6I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.

Why are there so many different churches which have so many different creeds? Do you know what your church teaches? Official Creeds And Statements Of Faith from original sources. Denominations grew out of the Catholic Church through the Restoration Movement:

This was an effort to bring Catholicism back to the Bible (not realizing that God's Kingdom, the church of Christ [Rom. 16:16], had never stopped existing [Heb. 12:28; Luke 1:32-33; Rom. 11:1-5]). Evidence of this abounds, but some is given at Traces of the Kingdom. The church of our Lord Jesus Christ never needed restoring as some believe and teach:

Heb. 12 (NKJV) "28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29For our God is a consuming fire."

The church of Christ has existed ever since Christ established her (the Bride of Christ [Matt. 16:13-18; Rev. 21]) in 33 AD.

Heb. 12 states that the Kingdom (on earth established on Pentecost) cannot be shaken like God shook the heavens and the earth. That is because the church is built upon the apostles and prophets as the foundation with Christ as the cornerstone (Eph. 2:20). Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior is the Head of the church, the One Body, not the head of multiple bodies (different denominational groups all believing different things which would make Christ a freak [A Head with many bodies]).  Our Lord, Jesus Christ is the Head of the One Body, the Kingdom, the church (Eph. 4:4-6 Col.1:18; Eph. 5:23-30).

The Old Testament prophesied that Christ's Kingdom, house and throne would be established forever. We do not read prophecy of multiple kingdoms and houses being established.

2 Sam. 7 (NKJV) "16And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever."

Rom. 16 (NKJV) "16...The churches of Christ greet you."

Eph. 4 (NKJV) "3...endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

Isa. 4 (NKJV) "4Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him."

~Many Scriptures tell us that man cannot add to or take away from the Word of God (Bible):

Lev. 10 (NKJV) "1Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD."

Num. 22 (NKJV) "18Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, "Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more"... Num 23(NKJV)26"So Balaam answered and said to Balak, "Did I not tell you, saying, "All that the LORD speaks, that I must do."... Num. 24 (NKJV) 12So Balaam said to Balak, "Did I not also speak to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying, 13"If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD, to do good or bad of my own will. What the LORD says, that I must speak."

Deut. 4 (NKJV) "2You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you."

Prov. 30 (NKJV) "5Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. 6Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar."

1 Cor. 4 (NKJV) "6Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other."

Gal. 1 (NKJV) "6I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed."

Gal. 3 (NKJV) "15Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man's covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. 16Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, And to seeds, as of many, but as of one, And to your Seed, who is Christ. 17And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect."

2 Pet. 1 (NKJV) "19And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit."

2 John 1 (NKJV) "8Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward. 9Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds."

Rev. 22 (NKJV) "18For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."

~For anyone who believes the Bible, the basic meaning of all these Scriptures that say not to add to or take away from the Word of God is that God has sealed His Word. He is not adding any more to it. Therefore, all books other than the Bible even those that claim to be "inspired" cannot be. They are all just written by the imagination of men without the inspiration of God. This includes ALL the manuals, catechisms, supplements and any book other than the Bible that claims to be inspired.

~Does doing exactly what the Bible says make the person a 'legalist'?

~As we have read, God says in His Written Word, not to add to nor take away from from His Written Word. God not only does not, but cannot lie."

Titus 1 (NKJV) "2...in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began..."

~What I find interesting to note is that God's own people asked Him not to speak to them. Though we do not know for sure why God speaks only through the Written Word today (besides the fact that His Word is the entire Law we live by), it is sad to think that God's children (Old Law) were afraid of Him.

Exodus 20 (NKJV) "19Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die."

~God lets man know by the things He has made, that He exists. His invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature are evident. This leaves man without excuse.

Rom. 1 (NKJV) "19...since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."

~The Holy Spirit tells us that the gate leading to destruction is wide. It is man doing his own will (persuing sin and not righteousness). We are advised to enter through the narrow gate because narrow is the road that leads to life. It is important that we understand that only a few find the gate/road to life.

Matt. 7 (NKJV) "13Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."
